Research In Motion (RIM) the manufacturer of the widely known BlackBerry Mobile phones, today at their annual BlackBerry Developer Conference announced the launch of the company’s new product, a tablet known as — the PlayBook.
The PlayBook will make use of a OS made by RIM’s recent acquisition QNX. The tablet OS is a cross of sorts between the WebOS & the BlackBerry OS.
Dan Dodge, co-creator of the QNX RTOS (along with Gordon Bell) joined RIM CEO Mike Lazaridis onstage & said, “”QNX is going to enable things that you have never seen before,” also adding that the PlayBook would be “an incredible gaming platform for publishers and the players.”
With full Adobe Flash 10.1 support along with added support for Adobe AIR apps, the BlackBerry PlayBook is full HTML5 ready (which has been integrated into RIM’s new WebWorks SDK).
The Playbook will come with 7-inch, 1024 x 600, capacitive multi-touch display, a Cortex A9-based, dual-core 1GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM, and a 3 MP front camera & a 5 MP rear lens (there have been reports that it will support video conferencing) #win
The device boasts of full 1080p HD Video playback, H.264, MPEG4, WMV a micro-HDMI port, micro-USB, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, and Bluetooh 2.1 (to allow it to wireless-ly sync data with your BB Smartphone). #epicwin
There is no specific information about the storage on-board but Endgadget Reports that there are 16GB & 32GB models for sure.
To add to that it’ll weigh just about 400 Gms Only. (#woot!!!)
You can check it out for yourselves here. Thought the company says nothing bout the release date of the PlayBook other than “EARLY 2011”. Also they’re absolutely tight-lipped about the price it will come out for in the market.
After a sling of iPhone killers, iPad has been facing a lot of cheaper if not necessarily better alternatives, to name a few, the HP Slate, JooJoo Tablet, the Dell Mini 5, the Notion Ink ‘Adam’ among others. Now with RIM entering into the ring, its going to be a fight worth waiting and watching out for.
The timing couldn’t have been better for RIM’s announcement for myself. My dad wanted an iPad for himself. We were just deciding yesterday whether to go for the 16GB or 32GB one when this announcement came through. Now I’m going to wait out for this (and the ensuing price war if any. :P)
All I want to say is…. “Apple Beware!! The Blackberry Playbook is here!!” #epicwin
